Red Hot Chili Peppers Honor Taylor Hawkins At VMAs 5 Months After His Death

Red Hot Chili Peppers honor the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins during their performance at the MTV VMAs 2022 on Sunday, August 28, where they received the Global Icon Award. When the band performed two hits, the drummer Chad Smith played on a kit that featured a hawk with Taylor’s first name on it. The memorial service comes a few months after Taylor’s untimely death in March.

As the band gave their acceptance speech, Chad paid tribute to Taylor, who won the same award as a member of the Foo Fighters in 2021. “There is another music icon, the Global Icon, and his name is on it. is my brother, Taylor Hawkins, and I want to dedicate this to Taylor, and his family. The group was honored for their decades of rock achievements at the 2022 MTV VMAs. Anthony Kiedis, Chad Smith, John Frusciante, and Vermin (real name is Michael Balzary) were awarded the Global Icon Award, and they celebrated by performing the classic song “Can’t Stop” after their more recent single “Black Summer”.

The Global Icon Awards seem to be just the icing on the cake for the band, as they celebrate their latest album Unlimited love, dropped again in April, and marked the return of longtime guitarist John Frusciante. The band has also been on tour around the world over the summer, which they’ll continue with a massive gig at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Tuesday, August 30.
