The three lines inside the upper loop of the “R” signify that Charles, 73, is the third Charles in his family. A crown embossed on the letters represents the throne of England, while a tiara representing Scotland replaces a version of the Scottish cipher. King Charles and his wife, Camila, Queen Consortstayed in Scotland when they ended their period of mourning for the queen.

King Charles is said to have chosen the design himself from a number of designs created by the palace’s College of Arms. He adopted his official signature, which is “Charles R”, “R” again representing the Latin term for “king”.
Elizabeth’s cipher is similar and uses the letter “E” and the letter “R” with a crown embossed on it. The letters don’t match and there is an “II” to show that she is the second Elizabeth in their family. In her case, the “R” stands for “regina,” the Latin word for “queen.”
Charles’ cipher debuted on the last day of the British royal’s private national mourning. Before that, they had a period of public mourning that lasted from September 8 to September 19, the day Elizabeth’s remains were laid to rest at the King George VI Memorial Chapel at Windsor Castle. Queen Elizabeth is buried there with her late husband Prince Philippassed away in April 2021, her parents King George VI and Elizabeth Queen Dowagerand her sister, Princess Margaret.
