The day before Kanye’s post, Billboards reported that Ye and his team were looking for potential buyers for Kanye’s music portfolio. The rapper is said to earn $5 million a year from the $13.25 million in annual publishing royalties his music generates. Allegedly, Kanye and his team are hoping to sell his portfolio for $175 million, even though Ye’s statement suggests he’s not involved in the potential sale.

Sony Music Pictures allegedly participated in the sale of this catalog, according to BillboardsAccording to sources, Kanye’s efforts to develop music “have slowed down in recent months.” Sources also told the publication that Kanye “has received offers from private equity and other music property buyers,” but he has never seriously attempted to sell his portfolio.

Kanye has released eleven studio albums and two collaboration albums, one with Jay-Zand the one that’s different from before Children see ghosts partner Kid Cudi. In the past, Kanye has stated that he does not possess any masters in his music. He even sued Universal Music Group and Sony/ATV Music Publishing in 2019 over the matter, though Diversity then reported that Ye do owns some, but not all, of his masters.

The movie with Kanye’s music takes place in the midst of a major change to his YEEZY brand. On September 15, Kanye decided to cut ties with Gap and officially ended the YEEZY Gap partnership after two years. Ye apparently sent Gap a breach of contract notice and got a response two weeks later, according to The New York Times, but Kanye was not satisfied with the answer and terminated their agreement. It all came about after Kanye publicly criticized Gap for ripping off his Balenciaga designs. He also hinted that he’s ready to ditch Adidas, another longtime YEEZY partner.
