Dr. Dre, 57 years old, has shared about one of the scariest moments of his life, in a new interview. The rapper revealed that his family was “called in to say their final goodbyes” when doctors assumed he was dying after suffering a brain aneurysm in January 2021. He was treated at Cedars hospital Sinai in Los Angeles, CA, amid high COVID cases and admits he doesn’t realize how “serious” his condition is.

“I’m at Cedars Sinai hospital and they don’t let anyone in, meaning visitors or family or anything like that, because of COVID, but they let my family in,” he said on Handling Doubts podcast with Dolvett Quince. “I found out later, they called them up to say their final goodbyes because they thought I was out of here. I didn’t know it was so serious, you know? Saw my mom and my sister and everyone coming in the room. “

“No one told me, I don’t know. That was crazy,” he continued. “So I was in the ICU for two weeks. Because of what was going on in my brain, they had to wake me up for hours on end for two weeks to do these tests. Basically, it looks like tests of sanity, like touching your nose, rubbing your heels on your calves and all that. So every hour for two weeks, I have to get up and do it. [I was] tired. As soon as they leave, I will try to go to sleep because I know they will be back in the next hour.”

Despite the horror of it all, Dre said he “never felt” like he was “in trouble” during his hospital stay. “I feel like, OK, I’m just getting the procedure done. I’m ready to go home,” he said.

Support from Dre’s family, friends and fans as he was receiving treatment and he was finally able to return home after about two weeks. In June 2021, he talks about his health and how he never accepts the problems he faces. “It’s a really weird thing, I’ve never had high blood pressure,” he said LA time. “And I have always been someone who always takes care of my health. But there’s something going on for some reason with black people and high blood pressure, and I’ve never seen that happen. But I’m taking care of myself. And I think every black person should just check that and make sure that everything is fine with blood pressure. And I will go on and hope to live a long and healthy life. I am feeling great. “
