This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning Win. Ordered to get irreverent and scathing sports stories delivered to your inbox every morning.
I should have known it when I woke up Friday morning and wasn’t surprised at all: There was Scottie Scheffler running on the leaderboard of the 150th Open Championship in St. Andrews.
No. 1 in the world is on the hunt. And if he wins the British Open? There is no doubt that this is the PGA Tour season in the top 10 of all time.
Apparently, GOAT had a GOAT: Tiger Woods ‘2000 season that included nine wins, three of which were pro. All-time greats like Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones and Byron Nelson have had their ridiculous years.
Scheffler’s resume? Three wins at the moment, one major win (Masters of course). The fourth and second majors will be incredible (and oh, by the way he finished 2nd at the US Open!).
The question to me is whether you consider Jordan Spieth’s absurd 2015 a top 10 year. They are: Five wins, British Open title AND Masters. The same goes for finishing second at the PGA.
When are we talking about modern golf? Heck yeah, Scheffler’s in there. But every time? Let’s see if he wins at St. Andrews doesn’t, and remember: There’s still a lot of golf to play.
