India’s “Chhello Show” vs Pakistan’s “Joyland” at Oscars 2023
India’s Chhello Show and Pakistan’s Joyland are both in the same category, creating competition at the Oscars.
This Oscar is very special not only for India but also for Pakistan because for the first time a Pakistani film has been nominated for an Oscar. Conflict between India and Pakistan is regularly witnessed on the cricket field, but it is now possible to watch it on the big screen. It’s not about any particular movie or genre. Interestingly, India’s Chhello Show and Pakistan’s Joyland are both in the same category, making the competition even more interesting.
A list of 15 international films was revealed at the 95th Academy Awards, selected from films from 92 countries. This list includes Chhello Show from India and Joyland from Pakistan.
Chhello Show (titled Last Film Show in English) is a Gujarati coming-of-age story about a boy’s love affair with cinema in Saurashtra village, Gujarat. He spent the summer watching movies, which made him completely fascinated by the art of filmmaking. Directed by Pan Nalin, produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur and Dheer Momaya. It stars Bhavin Rabari, Bhavesh Shrimali, Richa Meena, Dipen Raval and Paresh Mehta. This movie is available on OTT Netflix platform.
Meanwhile, Joyland is a Pakistani Urdu and Punjabi drama film written and directed by Samim Sadiq. The film depicts the story of a family whose head commands his son and daughter-in-law. He wanted a grandson to continue the family line. The context of the film is confusing when the youngest son joins a porn theater group and falls in love with a transgender person. It stars Ali Junejo, Rasti Farooq, Alina Khan, Sarwat Gilani and Salmaan Peerzada.
