Vehicle theft is a big problem that many metro cities and states of India have been facing for many years now. Even so, we have had several reports of vehicles being stolen from parking spots. Many state police are now using modern technology to track such crimes and rule violations. Recently, a 20-year-old man was arrested by police in Pune for stealing not one or two but thirteen motorbikes and two cars. What is more surprising is that he once stole a car to take his girlfriend out.

The 20-year-old was arrested by police in the Transport Nagar area of Pimpri Chinchwad. The young man identified as Yash Kiran Solase was driving a stolen vehicle when police caught him. He is a resident of Talegaon Dabhade. Yash used to steal cars and take his girlfriend out on these stolen cars. He has admitted to the police that he has stolen 13 motorbikes and 2 cars so far. All the cars that Yash had stolen were seized by the police.

This is not the first time something like this has been reported. In the past, there have been reports that the police have caught valuable stolen cars in the parking lot. In fact, if we talk about Delhi. It is not only the capital of the country but also the capital when it comes to vehicle theft. According to Delhi Police figures, between 2011 and 2020, about 3,07 thousand vehicles were stolen. Here every 12 minutes a car is stolen. Recently, a previous generation Hyundai Creta parked in front of the house was stolen by thieves. A Toyota Fortuner SUV belonging to the famous Indian cricketer Gautham Gambhir who is also a Member of Parliament from East Delhi was stolen in 2020 and has yet to be found. Thieves even stole the brand new Tata Harrier from a dealer in Gurugram, Haryana.

Just as police are now relying on technology to track down criminals, even thieves are using advanced technology to steal vehicles. The Hyundai Creta we mentioned above was stolen within minutes. They even check CCTV in the area to make sure their faces are not caught by the camera. There is very little that you as the owner of a car or a motorcycle can do to protect it from thieves. Start with parking. Never park it in a deserted corner. It’s better to park your car in a location that’s frequented by people. For a motorcycle, one can use a disc lock and a tire lock if it is parked outside. Make sure the car is parked in a well-lit place as thieves don’t like working in the spotlight that can attract attention. Installing security devices such as steering or transmission locks would also be helpful as thieves don’t want to spend a lot of time in a vehicle. Install a GPS-based safety device. Such devices will tell you the live location of your vehicle and some of them also send an alert when the car starts.
