Why do dogs steal and eat dirty food? (Part 17- Dog Behavior & Training)

Welcome to the 17th part of the 57 part series on Dog Behavior and Training.

You may find it disgusting that your dog loves your dirty clothes. But for your dog kid, your dirty clothes serve different purposes.

1. Your dog loves you and not only you, he also loves everything he associates with you, including your scent or your smell. He feels comfortable having your everything around him because it makes him feel secure. Dirty laundry like your dirty socks is a strong indication of your scent, which can give him comfort and a sense of security. When you’re not there with it, being close to your scent is the next best thing for your dog. It’s the concentration of smell in your dirty socks that’s what makes your dog so special.

So obviously if an item carries your intimate scent, your dog will assume you marked it as a valuable asset and he will do his best to achieve it. Chewing on dirty clothes is more common in Dogs with separation anxiety. Also, chewing on a piece of clothing helps bring out the smell he’s interested in and furthermore helps him feel closer to you. Since socks smell like you, they can make your dog less anxious during your absence.

2. Dogs treat their owner’s dirty laundry as a valuable asset, perhaps as precious as bones, toys, and other items because dirty laundry retains its owner’s scent. Some Dogs may even enjoy conserving the resource of this dirty laundry. And therefore can also show aggression towards other Dogs or people who come close to him. This happens because they see them as a threat and assume they will take away their valuables.

3. Your dog may also be stealing your laundry to seek your attention. Whenever you see your dog grabbing your clothes, you always react by chasing him for the clothes. So by doing this, he will get the attention he wants. In such a case, he may start to see this as a fun activity because whenever he steals your laundry you are always chasing him.

4. Another reason your dog might steal your clothes is because he likes their soft stuff. This is especially the case if you have a teething puppy at your home. Dogs chew on soft food because chewing it feels good for their mouths, teeth, and gums. Certain textures like tissue, soft cloth, etc always attract certain Dogs.

5. Boredom can also be one of the reasons Dogs eat your food. A dog who is feeling bored will always find ways to keep himself entertained and drain his energy. He may engage in destructive chewing habits like chewing on your furniture and clothes. To limit these boredom-induced habits, always make sure your dog gets enough exercise. Giving your dog the right amount of attention and toys they enjoy are also very helpful in fighting boredom.

  1. Don’t leave your clothes lying around within the puppy’s reach. Get a laundry basket with a lid that he won’t be able to get out.
  2. Give him better alternatives. Give your child soft toys to satisfy his need to chew and distract him whenever you notice negative behavior.
  3. Use positive reinforcement by rewarding him for chewing on the right things.

If at any time you suspect that your dog has swallowed fabric, immediately contact your veterinarian for advice.
